Mrs. Reshma Tharu, 27, from Dashgharwa toll in Bardiya, Nepal, struggled with severe poverty, relying on small-scale farming and her husband's low-income vegetable business. Their lack of irrigation and water made farming difficult, exacerbating their economic hardship. The "Improve Quality of Life and Sustainable Development Project" launched by Community Partnership International (CPI) and Women and Child Development (WACD) Nepal in June 2023 transformed their lives. Reshma joined the Dashgharwa Women Group, receiving training in micro-enterprise, healthy living, and community health. With NRS 50,000 ($378) seed money from WACD, she started vegetable farming by leasing 7 kattha of land.
By November 2023, Reshma earned NRS 1,50,000 ($1136) from her organic produce, enabling her to lease 8 more kattha. Her family now enjoys improved living conditions, including better access to education and basic needs. Despite ongoing irrigation challenges, their organic vegetables fetch good prices in the market. Reshma credits WACD and CPI for their support, which has relieved her family's economic burden and brought joy to their lives.
Inspired by her success, the community is motivated to start their own businesses. Reshma envisions joint entrepreneurship in the Model Village, including bamboo products and livestock farming. She advocates for continued support to help other women achieve sustainable development and improve the Model Village in Bardiya.

Mrs. Sita Chaudhary, 28, from Govind toll in Banke, Nepal, faced severe poverty, relying on 10 kattha of farmland and her husband's overseas work. With limited irrigation, their farming was unreliable, and they struggled to afford basic needs and education for their children. Sita even regretted past harshness toward her children over school supplies.
The "Improve Quality of Life and Sustainable Development Project" by CPI and WACD Nepal transformed their lives. Sita joined the Pragatisil Women Group and received training and NRS 30,000 ($231) to start a business. On August 25, 2023, she opened a chicken meat shop, earning 2000-2500 NRS daily with a net profit of 500-1000 NRS. Her husband canceled his overseas trip to support the business.
Now, Sita’s family is happier and more stable, able to afford education and essentials. They also grow and sell vegetables, despite ongoing irrigation challenges. Grateful to WACD and CPI, Sita feels relieved from economic burdens and is a role model in her community. Inspired by her success, others in the village are motivated to start their own businesses, envisioning joint ventures in farming and livestock. Sita advocates for continued project support to enhance women’s income and build a sustainable Model Village in Banke.

Mrs. Sarswati Chaudhary, 35, lives with her family in Baijnath Gaun Palika ward 3, Govind toll, Banke District, Nepal. The region relies heavily on nature due to inadequate irrigation, limiting their farming success and plunging the family into poverty. Her husband, Ram Kumar Chaudhary, struggled as a low-paid daily wage earner in furniture factories despite his carpentry training.
Their previous small business ventures failed due to poor planning and lack of investment. However, the "Improve Quality of Life and Sustainable Development Project" by CPI and WACD Nepal transformed their circumstances. Sarswati joined the Pragatisil Women Group and received training in business and micro-enterprise management, along with a NRS 30,000 ($231) grant from WACD.
On August 25, 2023, they started a successful furniture business, producing various items and earning 1500-2000 NRS daily. Ram Kumar obtained a vendor’s license to supply furniture to a government school and now employs two assistants. Despite ongoing irrigation challenges, they also grow and sell vegetables.
Grateful to WACD and CPI, Sarswati’s family is now financially stable and thriving. Her success has inspired the community to pursue their own businesses, with dreams of joint ventures in farming and livestock. She plans to continue supporting the project and empowering other women to achieve sustainable growth in the Model Village.
